Charity Concert at Princethorpe College Exceeds Fund-Raising Expectations

On 10th May 2013, Jodie Fisher’s “Over The Rainbow”, was hoping to raise some funds for the children of Langa, a township in the district of Cape Town, South Africa. Jodie, top row cornet star of concert headliners, Bilton Silver, visited the township as part of the school’s annual sports tour in 2011. She explains how the local children made an impact on the touring party:

“One afternoon we visited the township of Langa. We walked into a shed where an artist was painting animal pictures to sell. He said ‘the children will be pleased to see you’. And they were! As we walked into the village, children ran from all directions, asking for piggy-back and shoulder rides for our tour of the village. Some had no shoes on, but they ran over to us all like they had known us for years.”

“Once back in the UK, I knew I wanted to do something to help – they were such inspirational children who had nothing – so I decided to organise a charity concert to raise money for them to buy sports equipment and musical instruments.”

The evening of music, involved young musicians from Princethorpe College, Crescent School & the Rugby area, with soloists Lucy Stanton, Olly Dewes, Georgina Dadson and Daniel Leung performing each of their arts to a finely polished standard. Before all else, Bilton’s top youngsters, the Academy for Youth, opened the concert. The 200+ crowd, was compered by 11 year old Crescent student and Bilton Silver member, Lawrence Whalley.

Jodie would like to thank everyone who supported the concert;

“It was a fantastic evening and funds raised were way beyond my original expectations with an amazing £1053.74 being raised for the township in South Africa. Princethorpe College Chapel proved to be the perfect venue and Bilton Silver Band look forward to playing there again in the future”.

The Head Master at the College, Mr E. Hester, closed the concert and praised Jodie for all of her dedication to the successful concert and the joy the funds will bring to the township of Langa.
