Call of the Cossacks concert – Rugby Theatre – 23rd Feb 2014

Bilton Silver brought a taste of Russia all the way to Rugby for the ‘Call of the Cossacks’ concert on Sunday. The Band’s presence at the theatre is an annual event, each time with a differing theme to keep the avid followers entertained. This year, to an audience of over 200, Bilton Silver performed an array of Russian themed music from throughout the ages, including well known pieces such as Shostakovich’s Waltz no.2 from the Jazz Suite no.2 and Lev Knipper’s Cavalry of the Steppes.

Not all pieces were strictly of Russian origin, but rather referenced it from the Cold War era. Talented Horn player, Jennie Adnitt, performed a vocal solo of “From Russia with Love” written by John Barry; the theme track to the likewise named 1963 James Bond film. Lead Trombone player, Laura Moran, also took to the microphone to perform “Someone Else’s Story” from the 1984 musical hit, Chess. Another dramatic piece from the Chess musical saw both Jennie and Laura perform “I Know Him So Well” as a well-received duet.

With a standing ovation from sections of the audience which prompted an encore for the closing piece, Bilton Silver has already been invited back next year to keep the tradition going.

Keep an eye on the “Events” section of the website for upcoming engagements.
