On Friday 13th June 2025, Bilton Silver (Rugby) Band added an exciting new chapter to its history books by taking part in the legendary Whit Friday Marches for the very first time! Often described as “the greatest free show on Earth,” this iconic brass band event in Saddleworth has long been on our radar — and this year, we finally made it happen.
Marching into History
Armed with a coachload of enthusiasm, sandwiches, and a well-oiled set of valves, we started our journey from Oldham. Ex-Bilton bass player, and life member, Adrian Davis, was our guide for the day and had meticulously planned the best route to tackle the contests throughout the evening. Our route took us through:
At each stop, we performed Kenneth J Alfords ever-rousing “The Middy” on the march, and followed it up with the classic contest march “Praise”, composed by Wilfred Heaton and conducted by bandmaster, Jack Fisher, at the stand. With streets lined with enthusiastic crowds and a real festival atmosphere, it’s safe to say the adrenaline (and beer, in true Saddleworth style) was flowing!
The Results Are In…
For our first-ever appearance, we’re incredibly proud of how we fared among some of the most competitive bands in the country. Here’s how we ranked at each village:
And because we competed in six contests, we qualified for the Saddleworth Area Aggregate Prize, placing 30th out of 76 bands overall. Not bad for first-timers!
More Than Just a Contest
Of course, the Whit Friday experience is about much more than results. It’s about tradition, teamwork, community spirit — and making music in some of the most unique venues a band could wish for.
We left tired, happy, and absolutely buzzing to return next year with even more fire in our bellies. Huge thanks go to all our players, supporters, and organisers — and to the fantastic communities of Saddleworth for the warm welcome.
Until next year, Whit Friday… we’ll be back!
