The Sound of (Socially Distanced) Music

Since the very beginning of the coronavirus pandemic hitting the UK, it was deemed that brass banding was a non-essential gathering of people. That means, like many other things, rehearsals and concerts have been postponed indefinitely and nobody knows when things can resume some sort of normality. Whilst you can stop the players from going to the band room you can’t stop them from making music. The real power of humanity prevails; everyone is finding alternative methods of achieving things which we all took for granted before this pandemic pounced upon us. Our wonderfully talented principal cornet player Jodie Fisher came up with the idea of creating a piece of music from individual recordings, and piecing it all together. She selected ‘Do-Re-Mi’ from ‘The Sound of Music’ and electronically sent everyone their parts to practice and record separately. Any ensemble player will know it’s a challenge playing a single part in isolation from the rest, but with the aid of a metronome (set at 150 bpm) in an earpiece, it was done and the videos sent back to Jodie for processing. We stayed at home, we helped protect the NHS and hopefully saved some lives. As a bonus, we hope to bring some smiles to lives of others too.
