Judith started playing tenor horn aged 9 in the Salvation Army in God’s Own Country (that’s Yorkshire, in case of any debate). On moving to Rugby in 1986, she found a warm welcome at Bilton Silver’s band room and has played with them ever since, almost all of that time on flugel. Judith was the band secretary for 15 years from the late 90s.
Judith also arranges and composes for band and other ensembles, “not as much as I’d like – life gets in the way!” and has a website at www.judithhayesmusic.co.uk. Her music has been played by The Cory Band, Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, the GUS Band, Boobs and Brass, and – thrillingly – recorded by tenor horn virtuoso, Owen Farr.
There’s nothing quite like writing for your own band and your own friends and colleagues though – it’s always a privilege and a delight to hear the dots on paper take shape as real music!
